History of Reiki
Brief History of Reiki:
The man who discovered, or rediscovered some say, Reiki is
Dr. Mikao Usui who is Japanese born.
Dr Usui was a teacher at a Christian college and was questioned by his student’s as to the healing method used by Jesus to perform miracles.
This question plagued Dr. Usui and in attempt to find the answer he went on a search for the answer.
Dr. Usui wanted to understand just how Jesus
performed healing miracles.
Dr. Usui started his search by going to different Buddhist sects to find the answer but Buddhists were more concerned with religiousteaching then healing methods.
Dr. Usui then went to a Zen Monastery and inquired as to the answer to this same question, but they didn’t have an answer for him
but told him that he could stay and study the old sacred texts
that might hold the answer for him.
Dr. Usui began reading these sacred texts and while reading these texts came across a formula written in Sanskrit that told him
of a way to heal by contacting a higher power that could bestow
this healing.
Deciding that this was the information he had been seeking
Dr. Usui went on a retreat and fast high in the mountains to
try and find out the means of contacting this higher source.
Dr. Usui collected 21 stones to place at his feet as he fasted and meditated. Each day he would throw away one stone.
Dr. Usui continued in this manner until finally on the 21st day as Dr. Usui was about to throw away that stone, he saw a bright shining light rapidly approaching him and he became
afraid that this powerful light might kill him.
After calming his fears he allowed the light to enter his consciousness by striking him in the forehead in the area
of the third eye.
Once this light (higher consciousness) struck him it
rendered him unconscious and while in this state he was shown
bubbles of light filled with colors. In these bubbles of light
contained symbols ...these are the original Reiki symbols
that we use today.
This was the very first Attunement.
After being attuned Dr Usui left the mountain and experienced three miracles.
In his hurry he stubbed his toe, his toe was bleeding and
when he touched his toe instantly stopped bleeding…
this is the first miracle.
After being in the mountain for such a long time Dr. Usui
was very hungry so he stopped in an inn to eat…he ate a hearty
meal and the innkeeper warned Dr. Usui not to eat so much because he would get sick after not eating for so long. Dr. Usui ate and was fine…this is the second miracle.
After finishing his meal the innkeepers daughter has a bad
toothache that had left her face swollen and she was in constant pain. Dr. Usui touched her face and the swelling went down and the pain subsided…this is the third miracle.
Dr. Usui then decided to help the beggars in the street but
to his disappointment after he healed them they returned to begging instead of going on to work. Dr Usui then decided that giving Reiki freely without payment was a waste; this is when he decided to
charge for it; he believed that if people paid
they would be more grateful.
Dr. Usui went on to attune a few other Reiki Masters.
Dr. Hayashi was one of the masters attuned and went on to spread the development of the Usui system.
He opened clinics in Tokyo and went on to create the standard hand positions and the different Reiki degrees.
Dr. Hayashi passed his complete teaching to his wife and to
Hawayo Takata from Hawaii. Hawayo Takata went on to receive Reiki I and II then later Reiki III.
It is because of her that we now have access to this traditional art form.
